The South Bay Lions Club had their Annual Vision Screening on Saturday, January 23rd.

The screening was held at Wilson Park during the same time as the Farmer’s Market, from 9:00 am to 1:00 pm.  Gary Asano, O. D. and Deborah L. Geering-Fend, O. D. were the two volunteer doctors performing biomicroscopy and ophthalmoscopy respectively along with Blanca Valles, an optometric technician, who operated the Non Contact Tonometer.  Lion member, Helmut Fend was checking patient’s visual acuties, and Lions Club members also checked hearing and blood pressure.

Approximately 85 people were screened on a beautiful sunny day after a week of El Nino storms.  Of the people screened 53 were referred for vision exams due to reduced visual acuity and 6 for Glaucoma evaluations.  As far as hearing, 13 people were referred for more testing and 27 people were referred to have their blood pressure evaluated with their doctor.  There was one person with profound hearing loss and one with severe loss of vision.

The South Bay Lions Club each year teams up with the South Bay Optometric Society to provide vision screenings for the community.  The next opportunity will be on June 26, 2010 in Lomita.  More details to follow.
