Dear Members

On January 30th and 31st the nine delegates of the South Bay Optometric Society were in Sacramento for the Annual House of Delegates Meeting.  The nine delegates were Gary Asano, OD, Albert Chun, OD, Gene Calkins, OD, Gene Chang, OD, Deborah L. Geering-Fend OD, Annalisa Fernando,OD, Nancy Imamoto, OD, Lyn Oku, OD, Scott Fleming, OD (on Friday only), and AmyJo Calder, OD (on Saturday only).  The Low Vision Section for the COA was adopted.  This was organized through the efforts of Gary Asano, O.D. from our South Bay Optometric Society.  On behalf of our society members and the COA members I would like to express a huge thank you to Dr. Asano for all of the time and effort that he put in over the past year to get this section created.  Amy Jo Calder, O.D. was awarded Young Optometrist of the Year.  Congratulations to Amy Jo!  Ed Hernandez, OD announced that he will be running for State Senate in 2010.  The delegates also voted for the new COA Board.

As your President, I have received a few phone calls regarding the State of California not sending a payment to the optometrists that have been providing eye examinations and eyeglasses to the MediCal patients.  It is my understanding that now that the State has agreed on a budget, those checks should be processed.

The South Bay Optometric Society is currently looking for a President Elect. If anyone is interested, please contact me or one of the board members.  As always, anyone is welcome to come to the society board meetings to get more information or to become more involved.  It is a great way to network with the other doctors.

Deborah L. Geering-Fend, O.D.
