Dear SBOS
It is an exciting time for all of us and for more than one reason. Change is coming! We as a country have elected a new President who is all about change and optometry in California has changed as well. Governor Schwarzenegger signed the SB 1406 bill. Starting January 2009 we as optometrist will be able to start prescribing more medications, including some oral medications. Then in January 2010, we will be able to prescribe Glaucoma medications. A committee is being formed to come to an agreement on the continuing education that will be required to take before we will be issued the Glaucoma licensure. As part of SB 1406, if an optometrist has already taken the Glaucoma course, they won’t need to repeat it. We’ll keep you posted.
The House of Delegates meeting is coming up the end of January. We have nine members of the society that have been selected to be delegates. The delegates are Deborah L. Geering-Fend, O.D., Gary Asano, O.D., Gene Chang, O.D., Albert Chun, O.D., Gene Calkins, O.D., Annalisa Fernando, O.D., Scott Fleming, O.D., Nancy Imamoto, O.D., and Lynn Oku, O.D. The delegates will meet in January, just prior to the HOD for a meeting. If you have any concerns that you want addressed, please feel free to contact one of us before the meeting.
Our Holiday Party this year is being held at McCormick and Schmick’s on December 4th. Please look for the e-vite with all the details including the Charity this year which is Cheer for Children. We look forward to a wonderful evening with all of you.
Wishing all of you and your families Happy Holidays!
Debbie Geering-Fend
